Serfs ran away, refused to be servants, and even sued their lords. Prior to the Renaissance all of these ancient things were known and studied, but in a Christian light, the Renaissance scholars tried to discard their Christian eyes and look at things as purely pagan. From there the disease spread through Italy into middle Europe eventually engulfing all of Europe with the disease. This resulted in much lower rents in western Europe.

It made far more sense to believe that the priests, bishops and monks were also being punished for their sins, which meant that they were as bad as everyone else and that God did not favour them.
