That is because students get excited about that art class and want to go to school and participate instead of their parents making them go to school. As a result of the ways in which these questions have been answered, civilizations have emerged, nations have developed, wars have been fought, and people have lived contendedly or miserably. The arts enable us to imagine the unimaginable, and to connect us to the past, the present, and the future, sometimes simultaneously. In all these expressions, the artists clarify, identify, and give new meaning to the experiences which are nearly common to everyone. This report has five sections.
Although there is some truth in this, we believe that there is another, equally important reason -- namely, that we in the academy have failed to bring the humanities to life and to insist on their value.
